Target groups
This course is designed for policy makers and professionals working in the field of public and occupational health who have an interest in environmental health, and who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in environmental risk communication.

Learning objectives
After completion of this course, participants should be able to

  • collect and analyse essential information necessary for risk communication during environmental incidents;
  • recognize different psychological reactions in acute risk situations;
  • communicate about environmental health risks in acute and non-acute hazardous situations with different stakeholders (individuals as well as the larger public and the media).


Programme

  • Concepts and principles of risk communication;
  • Introduction to perception of risks and psychological symptoms in hazardous situations;
  • Investigation of possible (health) effects during environmental crises (primary investigation, risk assessment);
  • International experiences and practices;
  • Lifelike exercises in communicating with the media. 

 

Learning methods

This course offers a combination of lectures, simulation exercises and lifelike practice with international colleagues and communication trainers.
In order to actively participate in lectures, discussions and case practices, participants should have a good command of the English language.

Duration
This 5-day course consists of 40 contact hours, plus approx. 40 additional hours for self-study and assignments.

Fee
€ 1.575 per person.  The price includes a course manual, reading materials as well as lunch, tea and coffee. Travel and accommodation are not included in the course fee. If you come from abroad, NSPOH can arrange reasonably priced travel and accommodation for you.

Location
The course will be held at NSPOH premises in Amsterdam.

Certificate and accreditation
The course's workload equals 3 ects-credits. In addition, accreditation for 40 hours has been applied for with the Accreditation Bureau Social Medicine (for the Continuous Medical Education for Public & Occupational Health Medicine Specialists in the Netherlands). Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate from the school.
